Patient Center

First Visit

Initial visits generally last from 30 to 90 minutes. Your acupuncturist will take a detailed health history, perform a physical exam, and provide you with your unique treatment plan.

During your first exam, your acupuncturist will spend time getting to know you and your health concerns. You may be asked a wide range of questions about your symptoms, eating, exercise, sleep habits, emotional states and anything that may offer insight into your health.

Your practitioner will also employ diagnostic tools that are unique to acupuncture and TCM such as tongue and pulse diagnosis.

Your Treatment Plan

Once your acupuncturist has gathered enough information, you’ll receive a comprehensive diagnosis and a treatment plan that will explain:

  • ‍Your underlying imbalances
  • ‍Your time line of care
  • ‍What types of treatment you will receive

Getting The Most Out Of Treatment

For the best treatment results, keep a few things in mind:

  • Please show up on time
  • Don’t eat a large meal before your visit
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes
  • Be sure to discuss any questions or concerns with your acupuncturist
  • Refrain from overexertion, drugs or alcohol for at least six hours after treatment
  • Follow your treatment plan between visits
  • Keep all of your appointments, as each visit builds upon the previous ones

How Treatment Works

To treat any Qi imbalances, fine, sterile needles will be inserted at specific acupuncture points along the meridian pathways. Your acupuncturist will concentrate on acupuncture points related to specific organs, based on your unique issues and symptoms.

Your acupuncturist may include other related therapies in your treatment plan, such as cupping, Gwa Sha or moxabustion. Herbal remedies are another important aspect of acupuncture and TCM, and it is important to understand and follow your practitioner’s directions in order to get the most benefit from these treatments.

Your Role In The Healing Process

Your actions are a key component of your treatment plan. Focusing on your health and committing to a healthy lifestyle are the best steps you can take for your well-being. Together, you and your acupuncturist can heal your imbalances and help you achieve harmony and balance.

Even after your symptoms are resolved, acupuncture can assist you in maintaining your health, and possibly prevent future imbalances. The more you incorporate acupuncture and TCM into your life, the more you’ll learn to nurture your body, mind and spirit.

What is acupuncture and how is it done?

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific acupoints on the body. This brings the body’s attention to particular patterns of energy or Qi flow and promotes natural healing. Acupuncture has been shown in research studies to increase blood flow, reduce pain, and calm the mind. It is a safe, effective and painless way to address many of today’s medical problems.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional Medicine is the next step in the evolution of medicine. It brings back the personalized care that used to be medicine and uses the forefronts of science based diagnostic testing to help us get to the root cause of the problem. Once we understand what some of the underlying problems are, we use food, herbs, minerals, and lifestyle changes to bring balance and health back to you!

Do you take my insurance?

We do not bill out insurance. We will, however, be happy to give you a receipt for insurance reimbursement. Many of our services are not covered by insurance, but are accepted on health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts. We do our best to keep our prices reasonable and pass on our savings to you when possible.

Why does the acupuncturist feel my pulse on both sides?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the pulse is a diagnostic tool. Your practitioner is feeling for texture, level and depth and multiple positions. These positions are associated with the meridians/organ channels and indicate the health and energy flow of that particular organ system. Different textures indicate different patterns of function.

How often do I need to come in and how many times?

This varies from person to person. It depends on the problem, how long it has persisted, your overall health and how well you respond to treatment. Often we recommend once or twice a week for a while to resolve acute symptoms and then spread the visits out to weekly, 10 days, 2 weeks, etc. Many people get noticeable relief of symptoms within 4-6 sessions, but continue to come to resolve the underlying issues that created the problem in the first place. Once that is resolved, they often come back for other health concerns as they present themselves. Chronic health conditions (persisting for over 3 months) take longer to heal than acute ones (short term, recently manifested).

Why do I need to take herbs and supplements?

Often, herbs and supplements are recommended to balance and build up the body while you are in treatment. This is a great way to help you get treatment daily while only coming in to the office once a week or less.

Do you work with children?

Absolutely! We love working with children. Our no needle allergy treatments are effective and Dr. Audra makes them fun for them. For conditions other than allergy/sensitivity, we have noticed that children often respond more quickly and easily than adults to acupuncture. If your child is unwilling or unable to tolerate needles, we use cold laser to stimulate the points. They feel nothing other than the plastic tip of the probe touching the point gently.

How much does it cost?

Rates vary depending on services performed. Our rates per service are listed in our scheduling software. We also offer packages that bring down that cost and a membership option that offers further discounts.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is extremely safe. There are no side effects except relaxation. It is an effective and safe way to address many of our most common health concerns today without the harsh prescriptions. There is no risk of infection because the needles are sterile, single use and prepackaged to maintain this quality.

How does your holistic nutritionist vary from traditional?

Acupuncture is extremely safe. It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy, yielding no side effects just feelings of relaxation and well-being. There is little danger of infection from acupuncture needles because they are sterile, used once, and then discarded.

What is energy healing?

Energy healing is a holistic practice that activates the body's subtle energy systems to remove blocks. By breaking through these energetic blocks, the body's inherent ability to heal itself is stimulated. It is often a gentle hands on modality that includes but is not limited to Reiki, Qi Gong, Resonance Repatterning, Heart to Heart, Emotional Freedom Technique and even acupuncture/acupressure.
